Dragon Age: Veilguard – Highs, Lows, and Perfect Teeth
Episode Highlights
In this episode, we take a detailed look at Dragon Age: Veilguard, a game packed with both highs and lows. Whether you’re new to Dragon Age or a hardcore fan, there’s a lot to uncover here. Here’s what we cover:
- Technical Performance: Despite some minor screen tearing, Veilguard runs smoothly, even on ultra settings with ray tracing and DLSS enabled. BioWare impresses with a DRM-free release, though the lack of a pre-download option led to a frustrating wait on launch day.
- Character Creation: Veilguard gives players a robust customization suite with body shape options and some nostalgic touches for returning fans, like customizing the Inquisitor’s look and romance choices from Inquisition.
- Visuals: With stunning, detailed environments, the visuals in Veilguard are solid, though not groundbreaking. The “Hollywood” white teeth on all characters stand out in the game’s otherwise medieval-inspired world.
- Gameplay & Combat: The combat combines elements from God of War, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age II, creating a fast-paced experience with a large skill tree for diverse builds. Unfortunately, there’s no direct control of companions, a letdown for long-time fans.
- Classes & Specializations: Players can choose from three main classes (Warrior, Rogue, Mage), each with unique specializations. The skill tree is extensive, with specializations unlocked at level 20.
- Accessibility & Exploration: With multiple options to customize HUD, difficulty, and more, Veilguard makes the experience accessible. Exploring off the beaten path is rewarding, revealing hidden side quests and treasures.
- Dialogue & Writing: The game starts at a breakneck speed, with a rushed intro and dialogue wheel that sometimes misses the intended tone. Act 1 is a grind, but Act 2 showcases BioWare’s strengths, with meaningful choices that shape the world.
- Lore: While the game has moments of rich lore, some areas feel underdeveloped. Mystical elements like the eluvians now seem commonplace, slightly diminishing their intrigue.
- Final Thoughts: Veilguard isn’t perfect, but its charm shines through. For BioWare, this feels like a fresh start, and while hardcore fans may struggle with the tonal shifts, it’s still worth playing for the main story and RPG mechanics.

------ Intro ------ 0:00
Hey, everyone. Welcome back to Gamer Chronicles. Today we're diving deep into Dragon Age Veil Guard. Afte over 50 hours in this game, I've got a pretty solid feel for what BioWare cooked up here. And let me tell you, it's got its highs and lows. So straight up, if you're a new Dragon Age or you're just a casual fan, this game is going to be right up your alley. But if you're a hardcore Dragon Age fan, well buckle up. You might find yourself in for a bumpy ride. I still recommend it though. I enjoyed the hell out of it. Flaws and all.
------ Why this Week was Late ------ 1:00
So welcome to this week's show, everyone. I know this one is late and I have a good reason for this. I think on the beginning of the week, I had an abscess form on my gum, really fucking painful. And I was literally chewing painkillers and Anbesol, which is like a Bongela equivalent to death. I was just like, numb the gum painkillers. So, so high on painkillers. And it got so bad that I was waking me up in the in the middle of the night. And I was like a little bitch crying in pain in the corner. I was like, I'm so much pain. And I went to the dentist yesterday because I was like, I can't I can't do this anymore. It's quite unbearable. The dentist has a poke around and she's like, Yeah, you've got something there. And then she pokes it with something and I squeal like, like a little bitch. And she's like, Oh, I'm sorry. Um, the one thing you have to say is one thing that's nice about going to the dentist is all the dentists I've ever been to, all the. The ladies that do the. The dentistry, the dentists themselves, they're all quite pretty. at least one thing to look forward to about going to the dentist. But then she, like, looks at me and says, Are you brave?
What do you mean? And what? Because bearing in mind that she's about like five foot five and I'm six foot one. So you're looking at this like petite lady asking you if you're brave. You're like, What else can you say? You know, except okay. Yeah, I guess so. But she's like, This is going to hurt. I'm like, okay. And oh, fucking hell. So when she sits me down on the chair, right? Gets the, um, dentist anesthesia. Now, if you've ever seen an Anastasia syringe, for some reason, they just look so intimidating because they're fucking huge. So she grabs it and she shoves it right into other abscesses and apart from once, when I had an injection in the eye, I've never felt that much pain. I was, like, gripping the chair for dear life. And she she was like, Calm down. I was like, Fucking way this hurt. Like she said, you're like, No, you're already halfway in there. Just get it done. Just do it. So she does that, and then I'm like, Oh, it's over. And then she's like, Oh, wait, one more, and then shove it in again. There's a tear rolling down my eye and I'm like, dying in pain. Like, oh. So she then digs everything out something and she's like, Okay, well, that should alleviate the pain for now. And then I'll give you some antibiotics and all this. So I go to the pharmacy because I'm like, okay, we'll get these antibiotics. And suddenly because I'm all numb and stuff, I feel all this liquid dropping down. Wha that, anyway? I'm pouring with blood out of my mouth all over my shirt. And the pharmacist is like, Are you okay? Would you like a blood pressure check? And I'm like, What? No. What's wrong? And I just tap my hand on my mouth and it's just covered in blood. I'm like, Yeah, whatever. I just need to get my antibiotics and go. And then the dentist said to me, We're off after 2 hours. That was bullshit. It wore off after about 45 minutes. And I was in so much pain. So much pain. I was just sitting there, huddled in bed. I pick up the kids from school and I'm like, You are walking the dog. I'm not doing anything. And I was just there in bed feeling sorry for myself. So in a nutshell, that is why this episode is late, because I apologize. I wanted to have it done and dusted by the usual Wednesday morning rollout, but obviously I'm recording this now on the Thursday where I usually record it on the Monday or Tuesday. So that's my story. And yeah, it next time, which she asked, Are you just gonna be like, No, let me go. i'm going to be a little bitch and run. So yeah, that's my excuse, which I think is pretty good for being late with this week's episode,
------ MKBHD Speeding ------ 5:38
right? So let's get into it with some of the news. I didn't have this one on the agenda, but it came up last night, so. MKHBD, the popular YouTuber, he was doing a like 12 minute promotional video for a product, as these YouTubers get bigger, they seem to these technology ones, they seem to move from actually reviewing technology to being sponsored videos. So this is not video game related, but I thought it was interesting he was using this kind of like GoPro equivalent to film himself in a Lamborghini as you do. And what was quite funny was his speed was blurred out at one point, so you could see the speedometer going up and then it suddenly blurs in the video. And you could see speed signs on the side of 35 miles an hour, because there's a school nearby. Now, if you blur the speed you are definitely speeding. But what they didn't realize is when they edited the video, there was a speedometer on the passenger side as well. Don't know why it's there, but it's there. And he was going 95 miles an hour in a 30 mile an hour zone. And if he hadn't blurred it, I don't think people would have paid attention to it. But him just being an absolute idiot decided to speed down this because in the U.K., you'd be done because it is actually a thing where you if you submit video like that to the police, they can get you done for it. I don't know what it's like in America, but in the U.K., you can be done for someone else's video if they show you dangerous driving. You can be done for it. There's actually a police upload portal that you can go to and upload videos like this. So he'd be absolutely fucked if he was here. It would lose his license and everything, especially going down to 30. You'd probably be looking at some jail time as well for that. So yeah, I thought that was just interesting seeing how he blurred it out and said, Oh, I'm sorry. I, you know, I didn't know. Kind of thing. You fucking blurred it, you twat. Anyway,
------ Tony Todd Death ------ 7:42
so now for some video gaming news and we start off sad. Renowned actor Tony Todd celebrated for his roles as Candyman and the Voice of Venom in Spider-Man two passed away at the age of 69. His death was confirmed by his representative, who stated that Todd died at home on November 6th, although they have not disclosed the cause of death. And it wasn't just in Spider-Man two. Throughout his career, he has become the iconic voice in the gaming world. He portrayed The Vautiguants in Half-Life two and Half-Life Alyx. He voiced characters like The Dragon Knight, Night Stalker and Viper in Dota two and served as the narrator in layers of fear 2. Additionally, he contributed voice and motion capture for Admiral Tony Briggs in Black Ops two and played Dr. Rogers in Back for Blood. And he is set to appear as Lucas in Bethesda's upcoming Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, so will show up out of respect when he turns up in the game. Studios that collaborated with Todd have expressed their condolences. Blooper team developers have layers of fear 2, that he is forever entwined with the darkness we braved to face. Insomniac Games Who made Marvel Spider-Man 2. They also shared their heartbreak over his passing that he brought much joy to our studio during production and to many fans around the world with his great voice and presence. Tony Todd Contribution to both the gaming and film industries have left an indelible mark, and he will be deeply missed by fans and colleagues alike. So that's a bit of sad news. And he was great in the gaming world. It's sad to lose another icon because last year we lost Lance Riddick and that was quite sad. He was known for The Wire, the John Wick series, and he was in games that we all played. Horizon Zero, Dawn and Forbidden West, as well as Destiny. Really loved the fact that everyone just portrayed the farewell to him in Destiny. That was a really, really great thing. So yeah, last year we lost an icon in the gaming industry and this year, unfortunately, we've lost another one. So it's sad.

------ Compulsion Games Documentary ------ 10:57
Compulsion games the studio behind We happy Few has announced the upcoming release of a behind the scenes documentary titled Weaving Hazel's Journey a South of Midnight Documentary. It's a mouthful. Set to premiere on November the 12th, 2024. This documentary will provide an in-depth look into the development of their forthcoming action Adventure game. South of Midnight, Viewers can expect exclusive game play footage and interviews with the development team offering insights into the game's vision, art, direction, music and gameplay mechanics. The documentary will be available on Compulsion games, official YouTube channel, and will feature subtitles and audio descriptions to ensure accessibility for all viewers. South of Midnight is scheduled for release in 2025 on PC and Xbox series platforms. To be fair, I'm going to watch this documentary give it a go because we are happy for you. I was so psyched when it was in early access and then I think they got bought out by someone else and then it all went to shit and it wasn't the game we were expecting. We were kind of expecting like a BioShock kind of game set in the in the back time, but it just turned out to not be as good as we were expecting Anyway, I digress. Next story.
------ Scalpers get Screwed Over ------ 12:22
this one. I love scalpers. Greedy fuckin bastards who are aiming to profit from the PlayStation five Pro's release are facing unexpected challenges due to the console's widespread availability. So if you remember, during the pandemic, these pricks were going out buying all these consoles, Xboxes, PlayStations, even NVIDEA cards, and they were upping them by. Some of them doubled the price, you know, and people were paying it because it's Christmas. Your child wants it, you want it, you know, and there's nothing else to do because it's the pandemic. You can't go out. So what do you do? You have to pay upwards of like 700, £800 for these consoles. And it was disgusting what was happening. But anyway, now, payback. So in the UK, numerous eBay listings show the Ps5 Pro, which retails at £700, now being offered for less than its retail price, with some auctions starting between 510 and 670. Similarly, in Japan, while the console is sold out at most retailers, resellers on platforms like Muckery are listing it for only 10000 to ¥20000 above retail, which is approximately $65 to $130. After accounting for platform fees and shipping, many of these resellers are either breaking even or incurring losses. Although the Ps5 Pro's external disc drive, which is retailed at $80 or £100 because Sony are also greedy bastards, bearing in mind £100 is about $130 is experiencing shortages and is being resold at significantly higher prices. From £150 to £250 on eBay because you could go without the disc drive. So I don't think they're going to sell those. So these greedy bastards are actually getting what they deserve and hopefully a lot of them will just make a huge loss. Just don't buy it from them because that would even be better. If you don't buy it from them, then they've made an even worse loss because then they've ended up with all this stock that they can't sell. And you know, if they were smart, they would just return them to where they bought them from. That's what you would do, wouldn't it? You would have bought these consoles and then you just take them back. So who knows why they just don't do that.
------ Black Myth Wukong Physical Edition ------ 14:38
Anyway, moving on for you, lucky people who have got a console with a disc drive Game Science has announced that the physical edition of Black Myth Wukong for PlayStation five will be released on November 15th, 2024. Thi follows the game's initial digital launch on August 20th, 2024, for PC and Ps5. The physical edition will be available in both standard and collector's versions, with the latter, including exclusive items such as an artbook, a soundtrack CD, and a detailed figurine of the protagonist. Finally there, including something non digital because it is such bollocks that we've gone from these amazing things where you could get a figurine to what we're getting today, which is just like extra armour that you pay an extra £30 for absolute bullshit. But this is good. So the Xbox series X version of the game is still in development with no confirmed release date at this time. Which is a surprise because usually when you get something on PC, it just comes on Xbox because they're quite easy to develop for each other. But maybe it was a PlayStation exclusive for consoles, I don't know.
------ Nintendo Sues Palworld ------ 15:47
And finally, this goes from last week's news, but we know more in September 2024 Nintendo and the Pokémon company filed a lawsuit against Pocket Pair, the developer of PAL World, alleging infringement of multiple patents. Pocket Pair has since identified the specific patents in question. So if you want to look these up, they are on Google patents. You can look them up and it's quite good because it translates them. This is how I found what they were because some of them just said undisclosed. But you can find these on Google patents if you type in the patent numbers. So patent
7545191. This pertains to gameplay mechanics of capturing in-game characters by throwing an object at them similar to the POKEBALL mechanism in Pokemon games. Patent
7493117 is very similar to the above.I couldn't find a huge difference between the two. I guess. I don't know what they are. So anyone who's into that and can read between the lines can see. And then finally patent
7528390 riging a mount or I should say different mounts so this is where you can ride basically anything in the game. And this is absolute bullshit because there are so many games that let you do this that let you ride multiple mounts. Ark Survival, for example, lets you ride whatever you want and you know a lot of games with mods. The Witcher for example, if you want it, you can then ride a Griffon. So does this mean that rideable mounts won't be a thing? No, I think this is just a bullshit case and it's not fair. But all I will say is it's unfortunate that Pocket Pair is a company in Japan because I don't think this would slide in a Western country because these are just bullshit patents. So these patents were registered between February and August 2024 after the initial release of Pal World in January 2024 Nintendo and the Pokémon company are seeking injunction against PAL world and compensation of ¥5 million, which is the equivalent of $32,000 or plus late payment damages from pocket pair. In response pocket pair stated its intention to assert its position through future legal proceedings. right and that is it for the news. And I'll be back in a moment with Dragon Age Veilguard.
------ Dragon Age Veil Guard ------ 18:33
All right. Let's start with the technical stuff. S in the 54 hours of gameplay, I didn't get a single crash or any frame drops apart from just some tearing every now and again because of the frame generation. It just I don't get it. It just doesn't quite work as well as it should. But even though I've got a g-sync monitor and I'm not going to go above the frames of the monitor, it's weird. It just doesn't quite have it. But it's it's not noticeable to the point of it being game ruining. But it is there. So if you're rocking a high end setup, the game does look amazing. I had it running on ultra ray tracing obviously with Dlss on and it was fine. It ran perfectly fine, no VRAM leakage, nothing like that. So kudos to BioWare for actually making a game that can run on the PC with no problem. One of the few this year. Now, one of the annoying things. It's going to sound really weird because I'm very against DRM and they could have gone about this differently, but this is a surprise. E.A actually let BioWare release this without DRM, without microtransactions and you didn't need to use the app. I did because I was a bit worried that this game wouldn't meet my expectations, so I would rather pay £16 to play it over the month than the full price of £50. Now saying that it's almost a miracle in today's gaming industry. But the issue was the game dropped at 4 p.m. with no pre-load option, not even for like a couple of hours before that. So if you ready to jump in at release, it was a pain in the ass because who releases the game at 4 p.m. UK time which is 11 a.m. in places like Toronto and New York. Who does that? I mean, release a midnight in America so that we can get it at 4 a.m. UK time. And that way when everyone's awake they can download it for why release at 11 a.m. on a weekday of all things or 4 p.m., which is even worse. So it was a minor gripe for those of us who were hyped to dive right in because pretty much 4 p.m. by the time it downloads is dinnertime and me with the kids, I've got to then put them to bed. So I didn't actually get a lot of gameplay time the first day. So yeah, I was not happy
------ DA Character Creation ------ 21:06
Right now. Let's talk character creation. This is where we get some pretty good customization options. In Dragon Age, you can actually adjust the body shape this time, and for anyone who's curious, yes, you can give your character a massive arse and a massive bulge, be it male or female, you can give them both a bulge. That doesn't matter now, this is this is going to sound really bad, but Cyberpunk had obviously very amazing graphical customisation. You can pretty much have your character naked. This one, you can have them from the waist up naked, but if you're hoping to tweak their breasts to epic proportions. you can only have small breasts so you can't have it all but massive arse and bulge. You can go nuts with it. And for the returning fans, it's a nice little gift that you get to customise the look of the Inquisitor. Choose who they had sex with in the Inquisition and revisit a few decisions from previous games. It's a nostalgia trip and a half and I like the continuity. Obviously you made a lot more choices than that, but it's just nice to have that. It would have been better if they just some other games that used to look at you. Save files, carry over. But kudos to BioWare for this one,
------ DA Visuals ------ 22:31
Looking on visuals now, I know a lot of people on the fence about the art style. When I first booted up, I wasn't sure that I would vibe with it, but it did grow on me. The environments are stunning. Lots of variety, lots of detail, but it's not quite Baldur's Gate three. You know, the graphics are good, but they won't blow you away. Good. The one thing I did notice, though, is that everyone has perfect pearly white teeth, which is hilarious. You've been running around this grim, medieval inspired world and everyone's teeth look like they've been through a Hollywood whitening session, as well as having veneers shoved on again. It's minor, but it stands out because what they talk every time their teeth are like blinding you with this light. Overall, though, the visuals work. Even if the game isn't a fully open world, it's more like a map set up from Origins and Dragon age two with linear dungeons instead of one big open map.
------ DA Combat and Gameplay ------ 23:33
And now, of course, what we all love about RPG games is gameplay. And combat classes. So let's get into the meat of it. The combat, I would say, is actually pretty good. It's got a good flow. It feels like what they've done is mashed up some god of war from 2018, Mass Effect three and Dragon age two, and it just seems to work. The combat is fast, punchy, and the skill tree gives you plenty to mess around with and you could get stupidly overpowered if you build it right. I did have to crank up the difficulty because I was basically mowing enemies down like there were nothing. My one big gripe though, is there's no direct companion control, which is a letdown, especially if you're a diehard Dragon Age fan who loved the team tactics. I played as a rogue. I just like the rogue because I think they just work in a class of their own. They're not quite ace assassin and they're not quite a warrior. They're kind of in the middle. And I hate I hate mages. I don't know why, but I've never liked magic. So I do not choose magic characters. And one thing they did bring in was the Batman Arkham style blocking system, which is actually satisfying to pull off and with the accessibility options, you can adjust everything to your liking. So you can basically say, So I had honestly a problem because whether Batman blocking system goes white and then yellow, if you kind of block between the white and yellow, it always works. I got used to that while is in this you have to block when it turns yellow no matter what. So I kind of adjusted it so that the yellow would start a bit sooner so I could block it. Still a bit challenging to get right, but it is satisfying when you get it right.
------ DA Combat Classes ------ 25:20
So in Dragon Age, the Veil Guard, you can choose from three primary classes, each with their unique combat styles and abilities. You can then further specialize within your chosen class. Further. S here's an overview of all the classes. First, we start with the warrior. So warrior are powerful melee fighters excelling in close quarters, combat with the focus on strength and defense. And you can specialize in three different ways. You have the champion wields the sword and shield, emphasizing tactical defense and tanking reaper, using the knight blades to drain health from enemies, gaining supernatural abilities at personal risk, and the slayer who wield 200 weapons to deliver powerful heavy attacks. And then you have the rogue, which are agile and stealthy, skilled in both raids and melee combat would focus on precision and evasion specialization. This is the one I went for, which was the duelist, which focuses on rapid dual blade attacks with dodging and powering the saboteur, which uses traps and tactical maneuvers to control the battlefield. And the Vale Ranger, which specializes in in range combat, using both to strike from a distance. And then we have the mage class. They harness magical energies to cast spells, offering both offensive and supportive capabilities, and their specializations are death caller, which practices necromancy using dark magic to manipulate life and death spell blade, which combines melee combat with magical enhancements. And Invoker, which masters elemental magic with fire, ice and lightning. Each class feels unique, and I'd say there's a lot of here to dig into. If you're a fan of build crafting. And let me say that the skill tree is enormous, so you don't get to actually choose your specialization until you level 20. you got quite a bit of time before you can actually specialize
------ DA Accessibility and Exploration ------ 27:15
Moving on from that to the accessibility and exploration is one thing they did nail You've got settings for color, vision deficiency, sound effects for visual cues. They really made an effort here because you can tweak just about everything from the HUD to damage numbers to difficulty settings. If you want a stripped down or souped up experience, you can make it happen. So if you never want to die, you can do that. If you always want to die, you can do that. Now, in terms of exploration, you have to poke around every corner, nook and cranny, because there's treasure just placed in the most obscure strange places. So you have to look for everything as well as some quests as well that don't show up unless you're in the right spot. you should go off the beaten path and you'll find plenty to do, You know, prioritize these side quests, especially if there's anything involving factions or companions, because they add depth and that's what you need to balance out the main story. And for me, I found it a bit too bright and colorful. you found that as well just turned off the the bloom effect gives a nice, darker, more atmospheric look that fits the Dragon Age vibe.
------ DA Intro and Dialogue ------ 28:21
let's get into it. Let's get into the. Intro and dialogue mechanics. So BioWare seem to really rush the intro the game starts off at breakneck speed. With so much crammed into it because you barely know what's going on. I know they wanted to hook us, but it was ridiculous. The dialogue field is back so you can be diplomatic, sarcastic or just aggressive. And they threw in some inquisition style emotions too. Like sad or angry. I do like the range. But here's the thing that voice protagonists don't always hit the tone you want. You'll pick an option that sounds good to hear your character say it. And it's like, That's not what I meant. And I think we've all been there before with this kind of thing. And that moves me on to the writing because this is where things get a bit messy because BioWare is usually a top tier at character depth. But here It feels a little watered down. Dialogue is safe, a bit too safe because I wanted tension, drama, maybe a good argument or among companions. But now everything is just too friendly and it's like no one wants to rock the boat. And I will say, I did want to give up an act one act one is horrendous, but if you push through Act One, the game finally opens up in Act two. and that's where BioWare remembers that they're actually BioWare. Every choice you make starts to carry weight, shaping the world around you. Solos is a standout. His dialogue and voice acting are on point and Bellara surprised me. At first she annoyed the hell out of me, but a character actually grew on me as the story unfolded, and I can't emphasize that enough. The game in Act One sucks. Okay, so give it a chance and move out of that because otherwise I know it's a grind, but once you get out of Act one, then it starts to be more like a Dragon Age game that BioWare made.
------ DA Lore ------ 30:09
Now let's talk lore. This is Dragon Age, so you'd expect rich intricate lore, right? Kind of, because some parts do feel undercooked. Like, why are the cossets hanging around in places that make no sense? And NPCs barely react to major reveals like the Elvish gods are actually real people. Where's the freaking reaction? You know, inquisition. This would have been Earth shattering, and the illuvians. Remember how mystical and rare they were in Inquisition? Now they're everywhere. Every everyone in the Veilguard has one. It just cheapens the mystery.
------ DA Final Thoughts ------ 30:46
So after all this, you know, in the end, Veilguard isn't perfect, but it's got charm. You know, I came in with high expectations, and while it didn't always hit them, it found a way to pull me in. For BioWare, this feels like a clean slate moment, a chance to reset after a rough few years. So if you're new to the Dragon Age or you're just a casual fan, y will have a blast. Hardcore fans, though, such as myself, might have a bit more to chew on here, but I would say give it a shot because the main story is solid. Even with its quirks. Veilguard is definitely worth your time, so that's why Deep Dive into Dragon Age Veilguard. You know, i you've played it well, let me know what you think. Did it live up to your hopes or are you hoping for a return to form in the next Dragon Age title? Because obviously BioWare has now confirmed they're not releasing any DLC for this and they're focusing on the best mass effect game. hopefully the next Mass Effect game is is really, really good because I'm hoping that they've they've learned from their past mistakes and we can move forward.
